Meteor lights up the sky across Britain.
Police forces across the UK were inundated with calls last night after a large fireball, thought to be a meteor, was spotted in the sky. Reports of a 'bright light' and an 'orange glow' were received by police across Scotland and the north of England at about 9.40pm yesterday. Meteors are particles from space that burn up in a streak of light as they enter the Earth's atmosphere, whereas meteorites are larger objects that survive the trip and reach the surface of the Earth. 'The light was heading north to south. It lasted thirty seconds or more, It was really spectacular. We waited around to see if we would see anything else, but it was over very quickly.

Huge 35ft-long sperm whale found dead on Lincolnshire beach.
Crowds of interested people gathered to see the 35ft (10.7m) whale, which was first spotted near the bottom of Skegness Pier. But they were repelled by the repugnant smell of the animal, which has large gashes across its back and may have been dead for several days. Experts believe the whale collided with a boat and could have been dead for several days before finally washing ashore. Naturalist Tony Burgess, said: "If they get into shallow waters the weight of their bodies on their lungs makes it difficult for them to breathe. Male sperm whales are abundant in nearly all of the earth's oceans and undertake vast migratory journeys.

Man kills the biggest fox in Britain.
Hunted down after savaging a farmer's lambs, this is the largest fox ever recorded in the UK.The beast weighed almost three stone and was nearly five feet long – more than double the average size of the species. It was shot and killed by farmer Alan Hepworth who, at just 5ft 7in himself. Mr Hepworth later decided to weigh the fox after realising it would probably be the largest he had ever shot. And the 69-year-old found it weighed a staggering 38lb 1oz and was 4ft 9in from its nose to the tip of its tail. Experts say it is the biggest to have been recorded in the UK.
